#47 - History of the Revised English Bible

by Robert Nguyen Cramer

This BibleTexts website administrator has very much enjoyed questions and insights that have been emailed to him ever since this site was launched in September of 1996. On this page I share with BibleTexts browsers a few of the questions, insights, and responses, so that we all can further learn from and with each other.

Question/insight #47: "Please send me documents regarding the 'History of Revised English Bible'. It covers from the New English Bible to the Revised English Bible and its translator."

Response #47:

I do not have any "documents" on the Revised English Bible (REB). I only have the REB itself. Oxford University Press publishes the REB. You might like to email them for more information. (Though my copy of the REB is published by Cambridge University Press, it does not appear that the REB is currently in their catalog.)

Oxford University Press has a brief description of the REB at:

There is also a book that would answer your questions, but I believe it is now out of print. It is titled, New Light & Truth: The Making of the Revised English Bible (Paperback, 96 Pages, Cambridge, January 1990, ISBN: 0521381711).

You may also try searching the archives of The Christian Science Monitor, The New York Times, or other major newspapers for book reviews after the REB was first published in 1989.

This may not answer all your questions, but hopefully you now have several sources of information that you can contact.

See also the BibleTexts.com review of the REB at http://www.bibletexts.com/reviews/bibles/reb.htm.
