#91 - Are Jesus' sisters named anywhere?

by Robert Nguyen Cramer

This BibleTexts website administrator has very much enjoyed questions and insights that have been emailed to him ever since this site was launched in September of 1996. On this page I share with BibleTexts browsers a few of the questions, insights, and responses, so that we all can further learn from and with each other.

Question/insight #91:

Are Jesus'sisters named anywhere?

Response #91 from BibleTexts.com:

No, the names of Jesus' sisters are not mentioned anywhere in the New Testament. There may be some non-canonical literature that may give names, but such literature would have been written centuries later and cannot be considered reliable. Virtually all scholars agree that all non-canonical accounts of Jesus' childhood are entirely fictional. Some of those accounts even paint a picture of a superman kid who uses his powers in vengeful ways.

A webpage that lists virtually all of the biblical references to Jesus' immediate family can be found at:

This also includes a link to several other webpages regarding James, the brother of Jesus, who is mentioned several times in the New Testament.

Regarding others who were close to Jesus, you can get clarification as to who were the twelve disciples (which are listed differently in each gospel) and who were the various women named "Mary," by browsing:
