Beginning
with the Bible Lesson
Study Aid for the week of 7/26-8/1, the Bible texts from
the English Standard Version (ESV) [book
review]
will replace the Bible texts from the New Revised Standard Version
(NRSV) [book
review].
The ESV is BibleTexts.com's first choice for Best
Word-for-word Bible Translation and Best
KJV Substitute for Reading from the Pulpit. In most cases the ESV
translation is superior to the NRSV translation -- in (1) accurate
literalness, (2) use of familiar KJV wording, and (3) smooth-flowing
readability. (The NRSV study Bibles [book
review]
are still BibleTexts.com's first choice for Best
Study Bibles.)
In this current week's 7/25/2004 Bible Lesson Study Aid, the ESV
has been introduced briefly in RR1
, B1 , B19,
and B20
of the "Study Edition." Your feedback to editor@bibletexts.com
is very much welcomed regarding this new feature.

KJV - 1 O Lord, thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth.
NRSV - 1 O LORD, you are my God; I will exalt you, I will praise your name; for you have done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure.
TEV - "A Hymn of Praise" - 1 LORD, you are my God; I will honor you and praise your name. You have done amazing things; you have faithfully carried out the plans you made long ago. 2 You have turned cities into ruins and destroyed their fortifications. The palaces which our enemies built are gone forever. 3 The people of powerful nations will praise you; you will be feared in the cities of cruel nations.

14 Justice and judgment
are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.
15 Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O
Lord, in the light of thy countenance.
NRSV - 8 O LORD God of hosts, who is as mighty as you, O LORD? Your faithfulness surrounds you.
14 Righteousness and justice
are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before
you. 15 Happy are the people who know the festal shout, who walk, O LORD, in
the light of your countenance;

- 8 O LORD God of hosts, who is mighty as you are, O LORD, with your faithfulness
all around you?
14 Righteousness and justice
are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before
you. 15 Blessed are the people who know the festal shout, who walk, O LORD,
in the light of your face,
TEV - "A Hymn in Time of National Trouble" - 8 LORD God Almighty, none is as mighty as you; in all things you are faithful, O LORD. 9 You rule over the powerful sea; you calm its angry waves. 10 You crushed the monster Rahab and killed it; with your mighty strength you defeated your enemies. 11 Heaven is yours, the earth also; you made the world and everything in it. 12 You created the north and the south; Mount Tabor and Mount Hermon sing to you for joy. 13 How powerful you are! How great is your strength! 14 Your kingdom is founded on righteousness and justice; love and faithfulness are shown in all you do. 15 How happy are the people who worship you with songs, who live in the light of your kindness! 16 Because of you they rejoice all day long, and they praise you for your goodness. 17 You give us great victories; in your love you make us triumphant. 18 You, O LORD, chose our protector; you, the Holy God of Israel, gave us our king.
On this verse A.A. Anderson (Psalms, Volume 2 of 2, New Century Bible Commentary, London: Oliphants, 1972, page 638) comments,
The Hebrew teruah ('festal shout') is the noise of shouting, or the noise created by the musical instruments... In this context teruah is the response of the people; they know not only what to shout... but they have also experienced the significance of the acclamation. They praise Yahweh [Jehovah, the Lord], not simply because it is the right thing to do, but because they are overwhelmed by his goodness and majesty."
Robert G. Bratcher and William D. Reyburn (A Handbook on Psalms, New York: United Bible Societies, 1991, page 776.) comment:
In verse 15a we are not sure exactly how the festal shout was expressed in Temple worship, but it certainly involved praise. The same term is used for the shout of the Israelites when the walls of Jericho fell, so it may have implied victory (Josh 6.20). It seems best to express the function of the words 'know the festal shout' as 'know how to sing praises to you,' 'know how to praise you with song.'

KJV - 4 For the word of the Lord is right; and all his works are done in truth. 5 He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.
8 Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. 9 For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.
18 Behold, the eye of the
Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;
NRSV - 4 For the word of the LORD is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness. 5 He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD.
8 Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. 9 For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.
18 Truly the eye of the
LORD is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love,
TEV - "A Song of Praise" - 1 All you that are righteous, shout for joy for what the LORD has done; praise him, all you that obey him. 2 Give thanks to the LORD with harps, sing to him with stringed instruments. 3 Sing a new song to him, play the harp with skill, and shout for joy! 4 The words of the LORD are true, and all his works are dependable. 5 The LORD loves what is righteous and just; his constant love fills the earth. 6 The LORD created the heavens by his command, the sun, moon, and stars by his spoken word. 7 He gathered all the seas into one place; he shut up the ocean depths in storerooms. 8 Worship the LORD, all the earth! Honor him, all peoples of the world! 9 When he spoke, the world was created; at his command everything appeared. 10 The LORD frustrates the purposes of the nations; he keeps them from carrying out their plans. 11 But his plans endure forever; his purposes last eternally. 12 Happy is the nation whose God is the LORD; happy are the people he has chosen for his own! 13 The LORD looks down from heaven and sees all mankind. 14 From where he rules, he looks down on all who live on earth. 15 He forms all their thoughts and knows everything they do. 16 A king does not win because of his powerful army; a soldier does not triumph because of his strength. 17 War horses are useless for victory; their great strength cannot save. 18 The LORD watches over those who obey him, those who trust in his constant love. 19 He saves them from death; he keeps them alive in times of famine.

NRSV - 2 For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Praise the LORD!
TEV - "In Praise of the LORD" - 1 Praise the LORD, all nations! Praise him, all peoples! 2 His love for us is strong, and his faithfulness is eternal. Praise the LORD!

KJV - 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God [or the same as God or divine or godly].
3 All things were made
by [through] him; and without him was not any thing made
that was made. [4 In him was life; and the life was the light
of men.]
NRSV - 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
3 All things came into being
through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into
being [4 in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.]
ESV
- 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God.
3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. [4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.]
TEV - "The Word of Life" - 1 Before the world was created, the Word already existed; he was with God, and he was the same as God. 2 From the very beginning the Word was with God. 3 Through him God made all things; not one thing in all creation was made without him. 4 The Word was the source of life, and this life brought light to mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out.

Theologians of varying, and often competing, persuasions appealed to John 1:1-14 as the scriptural warrant for their views. Yet the precise meaning of logos in this text has been open to a wide spectrum of interpretations. (Donald F. Winslow)
Both Athenagoras and Theophilus [both writing around 180 A.D.] are willing to call the Son or Logos the Mind of the Father (Clement calls the Logos the Son of the Father-Mind). (Robert M. Grant)

panta <3956> di <1223> auto <846> egeneto <1096>
Here the Greek word dia <1223> was shortened to di, because it preceded the Greek word auto, which begins with an a (alpha). It rolls off the tongue more smoothly to say di auto than to say dia auto. Many languages, ancient and modern, follow similar practices.

KJV - 2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep...
3 And God said, Let there
be light: and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good:
and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 And God called the light Day,
and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the
first day.
NRSV - 2 the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep,...
3 Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
TEV - "The Story of Creation" - 1 In the beginning, when God created the universe, 2 the earth was formless and desolate. The raging ocean that covered everything was engulfed in total darkness, and the power of God was moving over the water. 3 Then God commanded, "Let there be light" -- and light appeared. 4 God was pleased with what he saw. Then he separated the light from the darkness, 5 and he named the light "Day" and the darkness "Night." Evening passed and morning came -- that was the first day.

KJV - 1 Praise ye the Lord...
6 Which made heaven,
and earth, the sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth truth for ever:
NRSV - 1 Praise the LORD!...
6 who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps faith forever;
TEV - "In Praise of God the Savior" - 1 Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD, my soul! 2 I will praise him as long as I live; I will sing to my God all my life. 3 Don't put your trust in human leaders; no human being can save you. 4 When they die, they return to the dust; on that day all their plans come to an end. 5 Happy is the man who has the God of Jacob to help him and who depends on the LORD his God, 6 the Creator of heaven, earth, and sea, and all that is in them. He always keeps his promises; 7 he judges in favor of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets prisoners free 8 and gives sight to the blind. He lifts those who have fallen; he loves his righteous people.

KJV - 3 O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles. 4 Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God my God.
NRSV - 3 O send out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling. 4 Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy; and I will praise you with the harp, O God, my God.
TEV - "The Prayer of a Man in Exile" - 3 Send your light and your truth; may they lead me and bring me back to Zion, your sacred hill, and to your Temple, where you live. 4 Then I will go to your altar, O God; you are the source of my happiness. I will play my harp and sing praise to you, O God, my God. 5 Why am I so sad? Why am I so troubled? I will put my hope in God, and once again I will praise him, my savior and my God.

KJV - 1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.
3 A bruised reed shall
he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth
judgment unto truth.
NRSV - 1 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations.
3 a bruised reed he
will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully
bring forth justice.
TEV - "The LORD's Servant" - 1 The LORD says, "Here is my servant, whom I strengthen -- the one I have chosen, with whom I am pleased. I have filled him with my spirit, and he will bring justice to every nation. 2 He will not shout or raise his voice or make loud speeches in the streets. 3 He will not break off a bent reed nor put out a flickering lamp. He will bring lasting justice to all. 4 He will not lose hope or courage; he will establish justice on the earth. Distant lands eagerly wait for his teaching."

KJV - 25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.
27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, 28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, 29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: 30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, 31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; 32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.
36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser:...
37 And she was a widow
of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but
served God with fastings and prayers night and day. 38 And she coming in
that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all
them that looked for redemption in [the redemption of]
Jerusalem.
40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.
52 And Jesus increased
in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
NRSV - 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him.
27 Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, 29 "Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel."
36 There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher...
37 then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.
40 The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.
52 And Jesus increased
in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor.
TEV - "Jesus Is Presented in the Temple" - 25 At that time there was a man named Simeon living in Jerusalem. He was a good, God-fearing man and was waiting for Israel to be saved. The Holy Spirit was with him 26 and had assured him that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's promised Messiah. 27 Led by the Spirit, Simeon went into the Temple. When the parents brought the child Jesus into the Temple to do for him what the Law required, 28 Simeon took the child in his arms and gave thanks to God: 29 "Now, Lord, you have kept your promise, and you may let your servant go in peace. 30 With my own eyes I have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples: 32 A light to reveal your will to the Gentiles and bring glory to your people Israel."
36...37 There was a very old prophetess, a widow named Anna, daughter of Phanuel of the tribe of Asher. She had been married for only seven years and was now eighty-four years old. She never left the Temple; day and night she worshiped God, fasting and praying. 38 That very same hour she arrived and gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were waiting for God to set Jerusalem free.
"The Return to Nazareth" - 39 When Joseph and Mary had finished doing all that was required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to their hometown of Nazareth in Galilee. 40 The child grew and became strong; he was full of wisdom, and God's blessings were upon him.
"The Boy Jesus in the Temple" - 49 He answered them, "Why did you have to look for me? Didn't you know that I had to be in my Father's house?" 50 But they did not understand his answer. 51 So Jesus went back with them to Nazareth, where he was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52 Jesus grew both in body and in wisdom, gaining favor with God and men.

KJV
- 35 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their
synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness
and every disease among the people.
NRSV - 35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness.
TEV - "Jesus Has Pity for the People" - 35 Jesus went around visiting all the towns and villages. He taught in the synagogues, preached the Good News about the Kingdom, and healed people with every kind of disease and sickness. 36 As he saw the crowds, his heart was filled with pity for them, because they were worried and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 So he said to his disciples, "The harvest is large, but there are few workers to gather it in. 38 Pray to the owner of the harvest that he will send out workers to gather in his harvest."

KJV - 19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
21 For the prophecy
came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they
were moved by the Holy Ghost.
NRSV - 19 So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
21 because no prophecy
ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke
from God.
TEV - "Eyewitnesses of Christ's Glory" - 19 So we are even more confident of the message proclaimed by the prophets. You will do well to pay attention to it, because it is like a lamp shining in a dark place until the Day dawns and the light of the morning star shines in your hearts. 20 Above all else, however, remember that no one can explain by himself a prophecy in the Scriptures. 21 For no prophetic message ever came just from the will of man, but men were under the control of the Holy Spirit as they spoke the message that came from God.

NRSV - 5 A faithful witness does not lie, but a false witness breathes out lies.
TEV - "Solomon's Proverbs" - 1 Homes are made by the wisdom of women, but are destroyed by foolishness. 2 Be honest and you show that you have reverence for the LORD; be dishonest and you show that you do not. 3 A fool's pride makes him talk too much; a wise man's words protect him. 4 Without any oxen to pull the plow your barn will be empty, but with them it will be full of grain. 5 A reliable witness always tells the truth, but an unreliable one tells nothing but lies. 6 Conceited people can never become wise, but intelligent people learn easily.

NRSV - 21 ...those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God."
TEV - "Jesus and Nicodemus" - 18 Whoever believes in the Son is not judged; but whoever does not believe has already been judged, because he has not believed in God's only Son. 19 This is how the judgment works: the light has come into the world, but people love the darkness rather than the light, because their deeds are evil. 20 Anyone who does evil things hates the light and will not come to the light, because he does not want his evil deeds to be shown up. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light in order that the light may show that what he did was in obedience to God.

KJV - 1 Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. 2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.
26 I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.
31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. 33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? 34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. 45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
47 He that is of God
heareth God's words:
NRSV - 1 while Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 [[ Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him and he sat down and began to teach them.
26 I have much to say about you and much to condemn; but the one who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him."
31 Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." 33 They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, "You will be made free'?" 34 Jesus answered them, "Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin.
44 You are from your father the devil, and you choose to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.
47 Whoever is from God
hears the words of God...
TEV - "The Woman Caught in Adultery" - 1 {Then everyone went home, but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early the next morning he went back to the Temple. All the people gathered around him, and he sat down and began to teach them. 3 The teachers of the Law and the Pharisees brought in a woman who had been caught committing adultery, and they made her stand before them all. 4 "Teacher," they said to Jesus, "this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. 5 In our Law Moses commanded that such a woman must be stoned to death. Now, what do you say?" 6 They said this to trap Jesus, so that they could accuse him. But he bent over and wrote on the ground with his finger.
"You Cannot Go Where I Am Going" - 25 "Who are you?" they asked him. Jesus answered, "What I have told you from the very beginning. 26 I have much to say about you, much to condemn you for. The one who sent me, however, is truthful, and I tell the world only what I have heard from him."
"Free Men and Slaves" - 31 So Jesus said to those who believed in him, "If you obey my teaching, you are really my disciples; 32 you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." 33 "We are the descendants of Abraham," they answered, "and we have never been anybody's slaves. What do you mean, then, by saying, "You will be free'?" 34 Jesus said to them, "I am telling you the truth: everyone who sins is a slave of sin. 35 A slave does not belong to a family permanently, but a son belongs there forever. 36 If the Son sets you free, then you will be really free. 37 I know you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are trying to kill me, because you will not accept my teaching. 38 I talk about what my Father has shown me, but you do what your father has told you."
42 Jesus said to them, "If God really were your Father, you would love me, because I came from God and now I am here. I did not come on my own authority, but he sent me. 43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to listen to my message. 44 You are the children of your father, the Devil, and you want to follow your father's desires. From the very beginning he was a murderer and has never been on the side of truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he is only doing what is natural to him, because he is a liar and the father of all lies. 45 But I tell the truth, and that is why you do not believe me. 46 Which one of you can prove that I am guilty of sin? If I tell the truth, then why do you not believe me? 47 He who comes from God listens to God's words. You, however, are not from God, and that is why you will not listen."

KJV - 10 his eye seeth every precious thing.
24 For he looketh to
the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven;
NRSV - 10 ...their eyes see every precious thing.
24 For he looks to the
ends of the earth, and sees everything under the heavens.
TEV - "In Praise of Wisdom" - 9 Men dig the hardest rocks, Dig mountains away at their base. 10 As they tunnel through the rocks, They discover precious stones. 11 They dig to the sources of rivers And bring to light what is hidden. 12 But where can wisdom be found? Where can we learn to understand?
23 God alone knows the way, Knows the place where wisdom is found, 24 Because he sees the ends of the earth, Sees everything under the sky. 25 When God gave the wind its power And determined the size of the sea; 26 When God decided where the rain would fall, And the path that the thunderclouds travel; 27 It was then he saw wisdom and tested its worth -- He gave it his approval. 28 God said to men, "To be wise, you must have reverence for the Lord. To understand, you must turn from evil."
